I am thinking about coming a RN. I would like to do something in the surgical room. Is there RN's in Surgery? Do I have to get a certification in something to do this?
Thanks
Answer:
There are lots of nurses in the OR! Its a great field if you're cut out for it. I am currently in nursing school, and just finished with my surgical rotation. There are two primary types of nurses in the OR: Circulating nurses, and scrub nurses. Circulating nurses are responsible for bringing the patient into surgery, transferring them to the surgical table, and putting the patient in the correct position. They are primarily responsible for the patient's safety, and as such, will make sure everyone who is sterile in the OR stays that way. The second type of nurse is called a scrub nurse. The scrub nurse is responsible for the instruments and tools used in surgery. He or she must count everything three times before the surgery, and three times after. He or she also passes the tools to the surgeon as needed, and may help with the surgery. A nurse generally is a circulating nurse before he or she becomes a scrub nurse, and the circulating nurse must have completed an accredited school of nursing, and passed the NCLEX. On top of this, there is additional training a nurse has to do before she can start as a circulating nurse, which is generally done in the hospital setting.
But be prepared! Surgery is not clean, or pretty. Circulating nurses and scrub nurses alike put in long hours, usually starting before 5:30 am, and have periods where they are "on call" (usually the weekend or holidays) which sometimes can make life outside of work difficult.
Hope this helps!
yes , in most states you have to have a assoicates degree to become an rn.. look into your local college for more information
There are RNs in surgery and they can do many different tasks on the surgical team. There are also surgical techs that help out with surgery which is an alternative to being a nurse. Look into your community college there are associate degrees in nursing and also programs for surgical technicians. Good luck!
